USAA is the best personal lines insurance company in the United States by virtually every objective metric. The lowest NAIC complaint index (0.26) of any major insurer — meaning 74% fewer complaints than the industry average. The highest J.D. Power scores for both auto and home insurance. AM Best A++ financial strength. Consistently competitive rates that rival or beat GEICO for eligible members.
The only catch is eligibility. USAA is available exclusively to active duty military members, veterans with honorable discharge, and their immediate family members (spouses and children). If you or anyone in your immediate family has served in the US military, you are likely eligible — and you should apply immediately.
USAA's model works because it serves a defined, relatively stable population with predictable risk profiles, enabling efficient underwriting and genuinely low rates. The claims experience is consistently cited as the best in the industry — empathetic, efficient, and fair. Banking, investment, and other financial services are also available through USAA with the same member-first philosophy. If you are eligible and not already with USAA, that is the first thing to fix.
